Remember that scene in Jerry Maguire where Tom Cruise freaks out on Cuba Gooding Jr. in the bathroom? “Help me, help you!” Of course you do! Even if you didn’t see the movie, you know that line. That phenomenal scene hits so close to home that it causes me consuming physical pain because it’s too often my reality.
My Ceterus story
My first position at Ceterus was on the Franchise team as a customer success representative, and I loved it. I was genuinely helping people everyday by putting out little “fires” and saving the day. I was a hero, baby! How satisfying is that? It was great being in a position where I was truly doing something to change the game for someone. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
Then, I moved to the Sales team because in my customer success role I had so much valuable exposure to how much better people’s lives were as a result of what we were doing. My mind would start to wander outside of my usual routine. I wanted to help expose more people to our service! We are really improving the quality of people’s lives by freeing up their time, increasing their profitability and giving them a leg up on their peers both in and outside of their brand. Of course I want to shout it from the rooftops: “You’re crazy not to hire us!”
That being said, I’m not a good “saleswoman,” I absolutely could not sell a person without feet a pair of shoes. What is a person without feet going to do with shoes? Why would I encourage that? It’s bad advice and a waste of my time and the footless person’s money. Fortunately, “selling” what Ceterus has to offer doesn’t really feel like sales. Our interest, plain and simple, is to empower entrepreneurs by giving them a real solution to a tedious task that takes them away from growing their business and doing what they love. We offer a pressure-free consultation and our technology is truly game-changing for small business owners.
So why is being in sales hard?
Sometimes you get people on the phone and they think, “Oh great! Here’s another smarmy little sales weasel,” before hearing the offer. Just the other day I had a woman blow a whistle into the phone when I called. Ouch! By the way, I’m still going to reach out and try to help you because as an entrepreneur, even one with poor phone etiquette, I still think you deserve a shot at being the most successful, happiest person you can be.
And that’s the thing. I believe so much in what we’re doing that it’s worth it for me to spend part of my day getting hung up on and dealing with the occasional stiff-arm — whistles and all.
You don’t have to do it all
Some business owners spend countless hours doing it themselves out of fear that not doing it all means not doing it well.
To them I like to say, “you’re not an accountant and you don’t need to be.” You’re a personal trainer, a doctor, a hairdresser, or any of the hundreds of other things that Mattel has dressed Barbie as. Regardless of what you do, you’re a person with a passion. You should be able to focus on what you love! Are you an accountant? No, and you don’t have to be. We’re accountants and we’ve got your back!
There are also those who have been doing things a certain way for so long that they believe it’s the only way. I hear things like, “I’ve been working with my current accountant for years so I’m not interested.” That always shocks me… this is a business after all. Wouldn’t any engaged business owner want to be savvy on the latest and greatest available to them? And don’t even get me started on the amount of money we can save them. We’re talking brand-new-car money, or downpayment on store number two money… Are you sure you’re not interested?!
As for those who give me their time and end up hiring us? Just take a look at our reviews. Our service and technology speak for themselves.
So, one last thing…
Imagine me before you now, I’m begging like a madwoman at the end of her ropes in a super manic, life-or-death voice, crawling on my hands and knees in ragged clothing, covered in dirt, reaching toward you with one un-manicured, feeble little human claw:
Entrepreneurs please – get out of your own way. You’re making your life more complicated than it has to be… Help me, help you. Please! Help me, help you. As a person actively trying to live out your passion and be successful, it doesn’t make sense for you not to take advantage of what we can do for you.
If you take nothing else from this, just know these three things:
- You don’t have to be a CPA to run your own business.
- Moving out of your comfort zone can help you grow.
- Jerry Maguire is a great movie.
