Rapid Tech Growth

Some of Charleston’s more mature software companies are doing quite well on the global software market. Blackbaud, a Charleston based publicly traded software company announced a new headquarters expected to add 300 tech jobs in the next five years. Blackbaud also just announced the opening of a new office in Toronto. Another publicly traded company, Benefitfocus, is a leading cloud-based benefits management platform that simplifies the way people manage their benefits. Benefitfocus has its headquarters in Charleston with offices in San Francisco, Greenville, and Tulsa. These companies are leading the way for other Charleston companies for superior performance in the Software as a Service market.
The tech scene is turning heads. In June of 2016, Charleston ranked Number 12 for Five-Year Growth in GDP in the High Tech Sector and Number 8 in Best Cities for Tech outside California and New York.
The tech community is also renowned for its local hospitality. Events like Dig South showcase Southern startups to venture capitalists and investors. This annual event has attracted big names like Google and Twitter and over $3 billion in managed funds. Charleston Digital Corridor and Silicon Harbor Magazine aggregate resources for the Charleston tech community at large, including jobs, events, and news. Another great resource in the tech community is Charleston Open Source. They bring together local developers, designers, entrepreneurs and tech leaders to share everything that’s amazing about working in tech here.

Though close to Florida, Charleston is no retirement community. From 2000 to 2012, its millennial population increased 58% — a rate higher than Houston (50%), Nashville (48%), Denver (47%), and Austin (37%).
According to the US Census Bureau and Bloomberg Business, South Carolina has been the number 6 state for domestic migration from 2010–2015 — meaning people have been steadily moving from all over the country to live in South Carolina. Many of these people are likely in their 20’s and 30’s.
